"Farfallio" 1993

Farfallìo. Lo sfarfallìo cinetico, il flicker, viene immesso nello sfarfallìo di farfalle riprese da piccoli libri. Il mio intento è stato, come altre volte, quello di tentare di animare ciò che sta inesorabilmente nel chiuso, nella fissità dell’inchiostro di stampa di un libro. In questa prova ho affiancato il ritmo di fotogrammi erotici nel compulsare di farfalle e eros. I cinque minuti bellissimi di ali di falene su pellicola del grande Stan Brakhage: io non avrei mai staccato ali alle farfalle, anche se...notturne.

Farfallìo [Flutter]. Cinematic flicker: flicker is introduced into the flutter of butterflies shot from small books. My intention was, here as elsewhere, to animate what is inexorably locked up in the fixity of typographic ink in a book. In this attempt, I brought into play the rhythm of some erotic film images, making butterflies and eros pulsate together. As for the extraordinarily beautiful five minutes of moth wings by the great Stan Brakhage: I would never have used wings ripped from butterflies, even if they were… nocturnal1.

1 Gioli here puns on the phrase “farfalle notturne”—literally “nocturnal butterflies”— another way of saying “moths,” which is also in Italian “falene.”
